March Highlights // 2016

Thursday, March 31, 2016
Wow. So, March was a crazy insane month, and it's looking like April is going to be even more insane. Hopefully in a good way, though. :P

SPRING BREAK! What a glorious week of no school... just... so I could edit instead. (ha) We watched a bunch of movies as a family and I stayed up to insane hours of the night and slept in late each day. It was so lovely. xD

I, um, turned sixteen? So that's a thing. I was planning to just stay home and eat pizza, but then my amazing friends held a SURPRISE party for me. It was just the sweetest thing ever and I'm so blessed by them. <3 Here's the short clip of them giving me a heart attack:

(hopefully the video works out. otherwise just picture me very frightened. :P)

I've started applying for jobs, too. :D Which is terrifying. So far I'm just applying for coffee shops -- we'll see if that turns into anything. *crosses fingers*

OH AND THE PIZZA SOCKS! I promised a picture in my last post.  Here they are in all their glory:

MY BOOKSHELF IS FULL. This only means another bookshelf, mwahaha. I already have stacks of books on the floor waiting for a new home.

So last month I read a whopping twenty-one books, but reading dramatically lowered to 15 books this month. *sigh*  Hopefully next month I can squeeze in some more reading time. But then there's Camp NaNo. So probably not. xD

Anyways, let's look at the books:

Favorite: STARS ABOVE! Ahh, it was such a lovely collection of short stories. *hugs all the charries*
Least Favorite: Ugh, Zeroes. Too many characters, wayyyy too long, and there really wasn't much of a plot? And I was bored for most of the time. So.
Best Cover: Ooh, probably The Shadow Queen. I love the gold lettering in the apple.

BOOK HAUL:

So I "accidentally" got a lot of books this month. Three birthday books, two for five dollars, and then another five books under three dollars each on Thrift Books. So I was a very happy bookish person for the whole month. ^.^

left to right: scarlet, the goose girl, enna burning, unwind, princess of the silver woods, the shadows, the schwa was here, leviathan, five enchanted roses, son, and gathering blue.

SO. MUCH. EDITING. THIS. MONTH.

This happened:

So I made a lot of progress. I finished sending off chapters to my critique partner, Abi, and then ventured out into the scary world of beta readers. If I haven't sent the thing out already, be looking for it today! *screams*

I've also kinda started planning my Camp NaNoWriMo novel. (Yes, I know that it starts tomorrow. Yes, I know that I'm horribly unprepared. Yes, I'm freaking out.) It's going to be a loose retelling of Little Red Riding Hood. I'm calling it Little Red Rain Coat -- contemporary, takes place in Seattle, and my main character is an adopted girl from China.

Here's how prepared I am to start this story tomorrow.

Do I know the beginning? No.
Do I have a name for my main character? No.
Do I know the ending? ...Kind of? Ish?
Do I really know ANYTHING about the novel? No.

But I have a playlist made for it! ...Important, right? No? Sigh. xD
To make April crazier than it already is, my goal is to write this story by the fifteenth. So 50-70k in fifteen days. Can I do it? I'm certainly going to try. I'll be editing the rest of the month with what extra words I have left.

A guest post by the lovely Hannah.

A GIVEAWAY?!? Mwahaha, yes. It'll be my first giveaway on this little blog so I'm rather excited. :D

A letter to my novel. (inspired by Aimee's post a while back.)

So, much excitement to come. Looking forward to next month with all of you even though it's gonna be crazy. We got this.

What are you doing for Camp? Are you prepared?! (if you're not, join me in freaking out and we can band together in our unpreparedness)

  1. Happy belated birthday!!
Your Camp NaNo novel sounds so interesting, I know the feeling of being totally unprepared though. That's how I was going into the 300 for 30 March challenge with my novel, Faithless. The great thing is that you get to learn along with your characters how your world works and your people tick. Even the things you did manage to scrape together as a plan in the beginning can be totally flipped on their head when you go into something more or less blind. That's the exciting part. ;)
    Good luck!

    1. Thank you, Emily! <3

Ooh, how did you do with the 300 for 30 challenge? I would've loved to participate in it... though I was editing. *sigh* Oh well.

I love the title of your novel. It makes me very curious. ^.^ What genre is it?

    2. You're very welcome. ^^
Haha, I did poorly because my family went on a roadtrip for ten days, so I kind of lost my rhythm there. I got about 10,000 words done, but that was less than I was hoping for. Still, I reached the minimum goal. It was a fun and highly recommended challenge though.
Thank you, it's a dystopia AU kind of thing.

    3. Dude, 10k is still awesome. xD Especially since you went on a roadtrip. I'm super impressed. ^.^

      Ooh, awesome. Sounds cool. :D

  2. Wait...Did you just say 50-70K IN FIFTEEN DAYS!?! Nope. I just could not do that. Give me a whole month. Still couldn't get that many. My camp nano is aimed for 8k which kinda sounds pathetic against yours, but I should be able to actually do it! I'm going to be working on a random story (I have tons of half done ones). This is my first time ever so I'm a little nervous. I haven't gotten into a cabin yet, my sister is in one and requested that I be invited, buuut nothing's happened yet so I'm really not sure what's going on.
I'm just randomly hoping for the best! :)

    1. HA YEAH. I'm honestly not sure if I can do it, either. But I won't know if I don't try, right? xD

Hey, that's still amazing! It took me a loonnnggg time to write 8k when I first started writing. If I hadn't discovered NaNo and wasn't so competitive, I'd probably still be writing at that pace. :P

Aww, I hope you'll be accepted into the cabin! Cabins make Camp NaNo so much more fun. And you'll do awesome. :D

    2. Thanks Katie, I completely amazed myself and wrote 1,000 words first day. Just like that. It wasn't even hard! If I keep it up (which I doubt) I'm going to have to raise the word-count aim!

Still no cabin as of yet. I'm just campin' by a little fire with my characters for company. :)

    3. Oh my gosh, you're already 1/8 of the way done! YOU TOTALLY GOT THIS, GIRL!

Aww. Characters can be good company, though they usually tend to drive me a tad insane. Good luck with them. ;)

Keep me updated on the writing! :D

  3. I am soooo excited for Camp NaNo! I'm doing 76k, then in November hopefully more. I'm totally prepared plot and stuff wise, but not amount of word wise.

  5. Sounds like you had a great month! And yes, editing is awesome when you get through a thousand or better a day. :D
I'm doing Mechanical Heart, a dark-steampunk retelling of Rapunzel, for Camp NaNo. It's only going to be about 20K words, but I have other stuff I have to do this month. So. It'll be good.

  6. I COMPLETELY FORGOT THAT CAMP NANO STARTS TOMORROW. OH HELP. I mean, I have a main character, and a general idea of the plot, but also NOPENOPENOPE. *SHRIEKS FOREVER* On another note, since you're trying to write your novel by the 15th (which I, too, may attempt to achieve simply because the second half of the month is insane), if you want, I could word war with you? Or if you're planning a 10k1Day I could join you in that? (Basically, I'm lacking a writing partner now and I need someone to word war with xD)

Also, your novel sounds really good. I love modern fairy tale retellings, and basically all fairy tale retellings, but this one sounds really unique and I want it, okay?

    ReplyDelete

    1. YES LET'S DO A 10k1DAY! AND WORD WARS. What day works best for you? The 2nd works for me pretty well... I mean, it's soon in the month, but maybe it'll be good to get into the story? :P

How do you want to set this up? Are you on Facebook or Google Hangouts? (the chat) Those are probably easiest for me unless you have another idea.

      TWO HOURS EXACTLY AHHH.

  8. I've been really interested in NaNo activities. Problem is, I actually need a story to write. And my brain is rudely hiding all the wonderful plotlines that I'm sure I have buried in my mind SOMEWHERE. *sigh*

Sounds like you had a fantastic March! Loved the video; looks like you were definitely surprised! :D

Daww, you still read a lot of books this month. I only read ONE whole one. And half of another. But they were excellent. The first one was Prophet by R.J. Larson, and the next one was its sequel, Judge. I know the ending and I'm going to cry when it comes. I am.

You're my younger sister's bookish role model. :) She looks up to your dedicated bookishness with admiration. :)

I'm so excited to beta-read your book! Be proud of me, because I'm dutifully restraining from all caps. :P

Ooh, I wonder what Hannah is going to be posting on. Excited for that one, I am. ;) Haha, the letter to your novel is going to be so fun to read! And a reply from him would be great too... :)

Ahh! A giveaway! *whoops* I've never entered one in my life which I hope will be remedied soon. ;)

    1. I TOTALLY UNDERSTAND YOU WITH THE NO STORY IDEAS. Wow, I feel that so much. I hope you'll get one before NaNoWriMo or the next Camp Nano!

I assumed you liked Prophet? I've tried to read that one several times... but it just didn't click with me. I have it on my kindle so maybe I'll have to try again sometime when I don't have any other books to read. (HA! Like that'll ever happen. xD)

Aww, that made me smile! That's so cute and kind. <3

I'M EXCITED TOO. I'm just a bundle of nerves now that it's sent out. I'm so thankful that Camp NaNo will be able to distract me. :P

I'm not sure what she's posting on yet, either, but I'm excited! xD
OOH, THAT GAVE ME AN IDEA. It would be fun to read a reply... hmm, I'll have to see what ends up happening. :D

Ooh, how awesome! I hope you win for that sake. :D

    2. THANK YOU FOR FEELING ME I NEED SOMEONE TO FEEL ME. xD I reallyyy want to try NaNo activities. I'm just waiting for the glorious day when all the plot bunnies will come flooding towards me in droves, and I will welcome them with open arms to cuddle them. :P

Even if I do come up with a plot before July, we'll be in the car, moving across the United States. Again. :) My dad is in the Air Force so we move every two summers or so. :) Maybe if at least one adorable plot bunny finds its way to me, I could write in a notebook or something in the car. :)

I looooved Prophet. A ton. If anyone gives me permission I could talk on an on an on about it. I LOVED IT. Still do. :D But I understand that not everything clicks for everyone. :) I read the Blades of Acktar a while back and everyone seemed to love them to pieces. I liked them, but something just didn't click with me, like you said.

I AM LOVING YOUR NOVEL; I ALREADY READ AND CRITIQUED LIKE TEN CHAPTERS. :D

YAY A POSSIBLE REPLY FROM TAN! I could see teeny traces of Tan's personality in Gita's. :) Little teeny ones, but they were there. :)

    4. Aww, cuddle the little plot bunnies. xD I want a bunny so I can name it Plot. Then it can be my plot bunny. :P

Oh wow. o.o That's... You move every two summers? Is that hard for you? I feel like that would be super hard for me.

Ooh, I've heard a lot about the Blades of Acktar. My library doesn't have it, so I'm not sure how to get a hold it... Hmm, we'll see.

AAH THANK YOU. *super hug* I'M. SO. HAPPY.

Oh, yes. I can see that. Tan's like an extreme version of Gita. Kinda. xD

*scolds the typos and your fingers*

    5. Aww, that is a great idea! All writers should have /literal/ plot bunnies. :P

Yeah . . . every two summers. :) It's not as hard for me as it would be for you; I grew up doing it, and I'm used to it. But it still can be very hard. My dad has almost finished serving for the military, and my family will be settling down in a couple of years. :D

I loved the surprise party clip! The first time I've actually seen in you in living, breathing, human form. :D I was very excited :D :D And your pizza socks are much classier than I was expecting. Nice going! ;)

  14. oh, I'm not doing NaNoWriMO but my April is certainly hectic, in all forms of the word. Four of the biggest things are my math competition on Saturday(!!!!), my 14th birthday, State History Day. And lastly, sadly:preparing myself to say good-bye to my class of nine years. This class includes my first and constant crush. Our relationship is more of a friendship, but sometimes I question that(moreso in the: are we more than that?). *tears roll down my cheeks for the next half an hour just thinking about it* There are so many people that I have grown to love, and I'm going to have to say good-bye less than two months from now. But, May is going to include literally a ton of good-byes, including all of my guy best friends(crush and one other) I'm hating time and change right now.

    2. April 18th. I might have killed a relationship with an April Fool's Day joke today. *sobs break the silence. Tears BURN down my face*. I didn't even mean for the joke to be serious. But, I might have seriously hurt him with it. I'm gonna die if that killed our "friendship/more". I love this guy to death. I have since I was five years old and I hate that i did this to him. I'm that kind of person who cannot pull a prank on someone and emotionally get away with it. I generally apologize about five times. Right now I want to apologize into infinity. And it was all a stupid joke. i'm such a jerk. What do I do?

CUTE PIZZA SOCKS! I have a mini collection of socks. Most of them are plaid and polka dots, but I have one with cupcakes and another with hedgehogs.

Out of all the books you read this month I'm familiar with one the most--The Books of Elsewhere. I read the first book so many years ago when all I was reading was MG/light YA. Should I continue the series?

You read A Branch Of Silver A Branch Of Gold! What did you think of it? Ooo, and I see some Books Of Elsewhere. I remember reading those! I agree, The Shadow Queen has a lovely cover. *gasps* You own Five Enchanted Roses?! Hurrah! You'll have to tell me what you thought of it when you're finished :).

You rewrote 5k in two days?! Wow. That is quite impressive :). By the way, any chance you'll be doing a post about Little Read Rain Coat sometime? And it can be fun to be mostly unprepared for a story before you write it :D. Then the story has more room to surprise you!

    A GIVEAWAY?! SO cool, I can't wait!

Also, Song Of The Deseret is AH-MAZING so far, I love it! You are a very talented writer :). Gita is such a wonderful main character! I was a little hesitant about reading this book, because I knew it was set in the desert, and for some reason I typically don't enjoy stories set in the desert as much as other stories. I FINALLY OWN IT! I plan to read it soon. *nod*

Heh, I would like to do a post about Little Red Rain Coat, but it wasn't really working for me. At all. I tried writing it today, and decided that it needs a lot more plotting, thought, research... just things in general. So I'm going to be writing "A Twisted Star," my space story. That's plotted even less, but I have a general idea of where I'm going and have 4k down, so it's going pretty well. :P

  24. The video clip is awesome. xD

    A giveaway... Ooooooh.

Pizza socks! I like yours better than Athelas'. Her pizza on her socks are more droopy-ish.

Fifteen days... Wow. You are quite insane, Katie. xP

Heh. Heh. Your reading dramatically lowered to fifteen books... *hides book list* Yeah, I've definitely read plently. Certainly not just a tad bit more in the whole year than you have in March... Heh. Heh. Heh.

  25. That surprise party was so sweet of your friends! But turning sixteen is scary... :P. Congratulations on getting Song of the Desert beta reader ready and good luck with Camp NaNo!

I am doing Camp NaNo this, but my goal is only 10k words for the fourth draft of my sci-fi novel. Yep, that one again, haha. Every time I finish a draft I say that I hate it and I'm finally gonna trunk the novel and then I come back and get all excited about it again. *facepalms a million times*
